Food in Mexico - Part 1

We really enjoy the food that is typical to Mexico. Obviously, there are some foods that are not our favorites, but then we have to realize that some American foods are strange, too (some of our casseroles, stews, cottage cheese and oatmeal come to mind).

Gorditas are tortillas filled with meat, potatoes and or cheese. So, so good!

This is beef stomach and pig feet for sale at the market in Saltillo. I didn't buy any.

About 15 miles from where we are living is the Rio Bravo Bible Methodist Church pastored by Santiago Hernandez.

This is Dafne Luna who was severely burned from her neck to her knees about 4 months ago. Her skin grafts are healing well and we thank God for His touch on her. Thank you to all who gave towards her treatments. The family is so very appreciative of your generosity and kindness.

La Boca - Part 1

A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of worshipping with a great group of people in La Boca, Nuevo Leon. Several gathered around the front of the church for prayer.

San Pedro

Pastor Pablo Hernandez from the San Rafael Bible Methodist Church, has felt a burden to plant a new church in tiny San Pedro, Nuevo Leon. This is the simple, adobe church building they are using to reach the people of this village.

In a nearby home, where they met for Bible Class, children show the craft project they completed and the new book they received, "Jesus, My Very Best Friend."

Kids kneel on the dirt floor and complete their projects on a wooden plank set on adobe and rocks.

17 children gather around a small table to learn about God and His love for them. "They are precious in His sight."

San Rafael - Part 4

After church, we enjoyed a delicious Sunday dinner at the Pena home.

As is their usual custom, the hostess, women and children eat in the kitchen. (Pictured from [standing at] left are: Mrs. Pena, Mrs. Luna, Pastor Cedillo's wife and daughter-in-law, Pena, Luna and Cedillo children, and Mrs. Pena and Mrs. Cedillo's mother).

The guests and men are served first, usually in a different room. (Pictured from left are: Pastor Alejandro Cedillo, Daniel Luna, Daniel Pena, Beth and Maria Stetler and the pastor's son. Steve was taking the picture.)

Salad, milanesa (crispy, pan-fried meat - so, so good!), and tortillas. You may also notice the bowl of ice on the table, they don't use it much, but they know we like cold drinks - very thoughtful.

Carne guisada (diced meat in red sauce - one of my favorites!), salsa and Mexican rice.

In July we were able to make a trip to the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. On Sunday morning we attended service at the Bible Methodist Church in the town of San Rafael.

This is their new annex, which was built in memory of Mike Butcher of the Port Clinton, Ohio Bible Methodist Church. Steve was able to help Saltillo Pastor Dolores on part of the construction of this building.

The tiny village of La Boca is nestled in the rugged desert mountains of the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. Its people are strong, stoic and beautiful. Their physical life is not easy, but their spiritual life is vibrant.

Weekend in Saltillo - Part 2

We were able to take several boxes full of craft supplies for VBS, provided by a ministry led by Dr. Connie Palm, in Hobe Sound, Florida. Thank you, Dr. Palm, Louise Crouse and other helpers!

The items are very well organized and in Spanish! What a blessing!

Pastor Dolores Hernandez with the new speaker system for which the Saltillo Church raised the funds. We were able to purchase it in the US for a much better price than they could find in Mexico.

Weekend in Saltillo - Part 1

In June, we were able to make a quick trip to Saltillo. We were so happy to see our friends again and visit with the dear people at the church. Here's a picture of Maria holding Deysi Correa's baby, Sofia.

Santa Apolonia

Dafne Luna Medical Need

Brother Homero Luna has given his entire ministry to the Bible Methodist Church in Mexico. He is an eloquent and effective preacher and pastor. For more than 30 years he has devoted himself to the work of the Lord. Many of his family members are also deeply involved in our Bible Methodist Churches.

Recently, Brother Homero's granddaughter, Dafne, was severely burned, when she pulled a pot of boiling water down on herself. She burned over 30 percent of her body, from her chin to her thighs. Most of her burns were 2nd and 3rd degree and required a lengthy hospital stay, along with special treatments and skin grafts.

We would like to help this precious family with their heavy medical expenses. Any offering to offset these needs would be deeply appreciated. You may send your offerings, marked for "Mexico - Dafne Luna" to:

What a joy it is to pray with God's people! How blessed we are to know that He hears us whether we are in cathedrals or chapels, in churches or homes, in public or in private. Whether we gather with many or with few, we know He hears our prayer.

In Northern Mexico, between Reynosa and Matamoros on Highway 2, there are about a dozen tiny homes and 1 church in a village called La Florida. Pastor Bernardo has been laboring faithfully at this church for several years.

Here is Pastor Bernardo teaching Sunday School. He does an excellent job and has been focusing on the importance of having Christian Families.

This is his daughter and newborn son.

On the way through Progreso, Mexico we often see this man standing while traveling in his horse-drawn cart. Kent calls him "Juan Hur" in reference to that famous charioteer of yesteryear. ;o) Enjoying a meal after church with our people in La Soledad. This church is often called "28" because it is on kilometer 28 on Highway 2 (known as "the most dangerous road in Mexico").

Santa Apolonia

On a recent Sunday we were able to visit Pastor Chito in the town of Santa Apolonia in northeastern Mexico.

These are some of the children that came for Sunday School. It was held in the church van since there are no Sunday School rooms in this little chapel.

They dressed their balloons in the Armor of God. It was a very nice project which the pastor's wife learned in our last Institute session taught by Helen Reiff.

On December 23rd we went to a restaurant in downtown Saltillo to celebrate Maria's birthday.

We also enjoyed a wonderful meal with the Correas. Great people! (Muy buena gente)!

Road Work

Last summer (July 2010) a hurricane dumped about 20 inches of rain over northern Mexico and caused widespread flooding and damage. Many roads and bridges were washed out and still need repaired. This is part of the road that we travel to get to church on Sunday.

The flooding washed the blacktop away, leaving dirt and rocks (and ruts and holes).

We haven't seen any evidence that work is being done.

Flat Stanley Goes To Mexico

We were glad to participate in a class project called, "Flat Stanley." Stanley is sent to host families who take pictures of him participating in their daily lives. Here are some pictures of what Flat Stanley did when he visited us.

He got caught on a cactus called a nopal. The people of Mexico like to eat nopales. They scrape the thorns off, dice up the cactus and eat it like a vegetable. In the background on the left you can see an outhouse with a blanket for the door. The homes and churches in this area do not have indoor plumbing.

Stanley went across the bridge that spans the Rio Grande. About halfway over he got his picture taken on the boundary line between two great nations: the USA and Mexico.

After Sunday School Stanley got his picture taken with Fatima and Mariana.

Later he stood in front of a statue of a golden eagle - the national symbol of Mexico.

Stanley went to church in La Soledad. We were happy to take him to see the people whom we love in Mexico!

We are so thankful to those who have sent clothing to be given to our people in Mexico. Due to crackdowns at the border we are unable to take in used clothing, but we still have a good supply on hand that we have been able to distribute.

One of the most fulfilling things we do is to visit these remote villages and to be able to be His hand extended to them both spiritually and materially through the distribution of donated clothing, shoes, books and Bibles.

Zacatecas - Part 1

It was very early on a beautiful Saturday morning, as we headed out through the mountains to the tiny villages of Sabana Grande and San Antonio in the state of Zacatecas.

We stopped part way on the trip and ate our breakfast by the side of the road at an altitude of 8710 feet. The benches for the people to sit on during the services were tied on top of the vehicle.

The dirt roads were very rough and rocky and as we neared the site for our first service, we discovered that one of the vehicles had 2 flat tires. We were literally in the middle of nowhere. Marc and Steve got the tires off, but the lug nuts sheared off, so even if we were able to get the tires repaired, we had no way to hold them on.

We were grateful for the two men from a nearby village who stopped to help us.

It took all day, but we eventually got back on the road.

Some of the children holding their copies of "Jesus, My Very Best Friend." What a joy to be able to give them good books that tell them of God's love.

Many of the drug cartel members live in this area and the local people were very concerned that we had to travel after dark to get back home. We are thankful for God's protection and care for us.

Building Project

Steve has been helping on the construction of a church annex in the little town of San Rafael, Nuevo Leon. Building styles are very different here in Mexico, but he is learning lots of new methods.

We were happy to be able to make the trip from Mexico in August to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Steve's parents.

Youth Campout - Part 5

It took us about 2 hours to go 12 miles, but we finally made it out onto the paved road. We made some great memories! :o)

Youth Campout - Part 4

The campout was over and it was time to head home. But, between us and the highway were 12 miles of dirt road, which after several hours of rain had now turned to mud.

Barely one-fourth of a mile from the campsite, vehicle #1 was already stuck.

We all pulled off into the grass and helped each vehicle make it through the rough spots one-by-one.

Youth Campout - Part 1

We traveled from our home in Saltillo on this nice black-topped road, drinking in the beautiful scenery along the 13 mile stretch.

Then we turned onto this dirt and gravel road. It was 12 slow miles of bumps, rocks and holes.

But, there was beautiful scenery here, as well.

We arrived at the campground and Steve captured this scene from inside an abandoned adobe building.

This is Maria's Senior Year in College. She has lived in the Girl's Dorm the previous years. But, GBS had so many young ladies that there was not enough room for them in the dorm. So, Maria and 3 of her friends were moved into an on-campus apartment. Here is a picture of the front porch.

On Tuesday, August 17, we arrived at God's Bible School and College to enroll both of our children. Maria is a College Senior in the Education Program and Kent is a Freshman in the Ministerial Program.

With the recent upsurge in violence, crossing the border has become much more difficult. The immigration officials are rejecting all used clothing and shoes. Although it pains us to do so, we are asking that until these restrictions are lifted, all donated items should be new.

Going Away Party

We are happy that our children have the opportunity to attend Bible College, but it is hard to be so far apart.

Friends and Weather

We were so happy that Nathan and Myranda Weaver were able to be in Mexico this summer. They completed many helpful projects while they were here.

It was our privilege to have them and the Sankeys over for a meal.

Our house is tiny so part of the group sat outside.

Water Woes

When Hurricane Alex went through a few weeks ago, the lid to our water tank blew off. Because of that, the tank was full of debris and mosquito larvae, which I was finding in our showers, laundry, sinks, etc. Yuck! Steve got up on the roof, cleaned out the tank and replaced the lid.

He risked life and limb to get up there. The ladder we were using was not long enough to reach from the ground to the roof, so he had to prop it on the neighbor's wall. It was treacherous and since then we have purchased a bigger ladder. It was outrageously expensive, but I'd rather Steve was safe!

In order to clean out the tank, it had to be empty of water and by the time it was cleaned out, the city was not pumping water to our house anymore. We only get water a few hours a day, 4 days a week. So, we had to call a water truck to come and fill up our tank.

They took the water hose up their (safer) ladder right by our bamboo plants.

The truck looked a little rough, but I was grateful to have water again!

During the month of July, our family had the privilege of attending and representing Mexico Missions at the Alabama Bible Methodist Camp. We had a wonderful time and are so glad we were able to go. Some of Steve's family was there and we were able to spend some time together.

Repairs at La Boca - Part #1

This village church was built several years ago and some of the plaster is beginning to crack and fall away from the adobe. Our missionary work team is traveling 3 hours each day to work on these repairs. The first part of the trip is on good, but mountainous roads, the last part is on very rough gravel and dirt roads.

Senior Trip

After graduating, Kent and his cousin, Kenny, took a Senior Trip to Branson with their Dads. It was called a Senior Trip because the boys were Seniors in High School and the Dads are Senior Citizens. ;o)

Youth Congress, Day #2, Part 2

We left Oaxaca City on Tuesday morning and headed over the mountains. It is a trip of 120 miles which usually takes about 6 hours, because the roads are so bad. We had a little vehicle problem which held us up for a few hours.

We arrived at San Gabriel, Mixtepec, Oaxaca at 10 p.m. They fed us chicken and rice soup, tortillas, and sweet bread. In this picture, you can see a girl pouring horchata. It is a drink made by boiling rice and adding sugar and cinnamon.

A caravan of 4 vehicles and 32 people left Saltillo at 6 a.m. on a Monday morning and headed south.

We are beginning to get some warmer temperatures here in Saltillo, Mexico... Not a minute too soon! :o)

It is desert here. It takes too much water to keep a large garden alive. I actually drained our tank watering the grass the other night. So, we went 12 hours without water. :/ I'll try not to do that again!! :o)

Kent's 18th Birthday

We want to wish our youngest child, Kent, a Happy 18th Birthday. He was born very early on Saturday, February 15, 1992. On Friday, the 14th, I taught school, prepared 6 week report cards for my students, made lesson plans for the next 6 weeks for my substitute, kept Melanie (Kuhn) Clemens (so RB and Pam could celebrate Valentine's Day), and then late in the evening Steve took me to the hospital, while RB and Pam kept Maria for us. All Steve's students were mad at me because I had Kent on a Saturday and came home on Sunday, so Steve didn't miss any school. :o)

Kent is a great kid! He keeps us laughing. :o) He's almost done with highschool and plans to attend God's Bible School this fall.

Many in the Alabama Conference donated items to be distributed in Mexico. The van was loaded with great resources for our people. Thank you Alabama Conference.

Faith Church in Thomasville, North Carolina donated many items, as well, and helped us acquire a large trailer, which we towed behind the van. Thank you, Faith Church!

Steve had a wonderful service at the Haven of Rest Bible Church in Galax, Virginia.

We had a great meal with our Pastors at La Boca - Pablo and Ofelia Hernandez. Wonderful people.

Dirty Water

Along with the cold weather, came a broken pipe, which led to the discovery that the water tank on the roof (which is our water supply) was lidless, which contributes to water that looks like this.

The tank is now clean, but I am sick just thinking about showering, washing clothes, washing dishes and brushing my teeth in that sludge! UGH! :o(

Back in Mexico

We arrived at our home in Mexico on January 6th. It was very cold. Our homes have no furnaces so we huddled around a space heater. We had a little snow and quite a bit of frost.

Here are some frost covered bushes in our neighborhood. Nice subdued colors on the house pictured above, huh?! :o)

There was a little snow on the mountain tops for several days.

Our Last Few Days in the USA

On December 23rd, we celebrated Maria's 21st birthday. She is a junior at God's Bible College. We are so proud of her! The hardest thing about living in Mexico is leaving 1/4 of our little family behind.

We celebrated Christmas with my parents, Leonard and Janet Sankey, in Bedford, Indiana.

We said, "Good-Bye," to Maria and her great boyfriend, Joe Hough.

We loaded the Jeep clear to the ceiling. Kent barely had enough room to sit. :o)

And then we headed south.
